Amani Oakley
Amani Oakley practices in the areas of medical litigation, human rights and health law and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School. Prior to being called to the Bar in 1998, Ms. Oakley was a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Biochemistry at Wellesley and Toronto East General Hospitals. She practised laboratory science for ten years, and during that time was very active in her role as the union president in issues that included improvement of patient care, public delivery of health care, and inter-hospital cooperation to improve accessibility and quality of health care.

Additionally, Ms. Oakley has a Specialist Bachelor of Science degree (U of T) in Microbiology, and is registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists. Ms. Oakley has an in-depth and behind-the-scenes understanding of health care issues. At a Toronto inquest in 2000, she represented the family of a young man who died of an asthmatic attack when the nearby hospital was on critical care by-pass, and unable to accept his ambulance. The Inquest explored the entire health care system in Ontario, in order to examine what improvements could be made, including increased funding and training for Emergency Rooms, Hospitals and Ambulance Services.

Ms. Oakley represented the family of a woman who died as a result of a stroke suffered after a chiropractic neck manipulation, at the longest Coroner’s Inquest in Ontario history. The Inquest began in April of 2002 and the jury handed down its recommendations in January of 2004. Ms. Oakley and her husband, Neil, succeeded in having the jury determine that the deceased’s death was due to “accident” - that being the chiropractic manipulation, and obtaining many helpful recommendations from the jury.

She currently has a practice largely focussed on medical malpractice, and because of her background in health care is often used as a resource by other medical malpractice lawyers, and has contributed to numerous Continuing Legal Education programs offered by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Assocation. She is also a resource for lawyers suing chiropractors, and has received calls from as far away as Australia and England, for her assistance.
